Ollie Crack Corn

This morning we skipped church and slept in upon Grandma's suggestion. If Grandma suggests skipping church, hey why not!

After lounging until 10:00 and playing until 12:00, it was time to get down to business with the corn project. Daddy was dragging his feet, but we finally convinced him the corn wasn't going anywhere unless we did it, so off to Grandma's we headed.

When we arrived Grandma was already working on pulling out the green beans to make room for gourds and more pumpkins. Grandpa was hauling round bales, so Ollie was excited that the tractor was out of the shed and running. Of course, Grandpa took Ollie for a short ride in the driveway, but he would have stayed on for more if I would have let him.

Eventually we got around to picking the corn. We ended up with enough to freeze 85 ears and give away several dozen. After shucking for what felt like hours while watching the cows feast, we were ready to blanch and and cut kernels off the ears. This was Daddy's first canning/freezing adventure, so he wasn't sure what to expect. I think he found it to be much more mundane than he had imagined gardening, but that's life. We powered through and finished in under 2 hours with 30 bags of corn. Not too bad.

Ollie napped the entire time we were working on the corn, so once he woke up the boys headed to the shed to play with tractors.

It's been a long day and Speck and I are ready for bed. Gardening is hard work, right Daddy?
