For some reason Ollie woke up at 5:00 this morning. I managed to make it to his crib without even opening my eyes, but I was rudely awakened when I twisted my back while getting him out of bed. I'm always so careful when I lift him, but I guess my sleepiness got the best of me. I didn't see the point in waking Daddy too, so I powered thru and managed to feed Ollie and get him back to sleep. I made it to the couch and stayed there until 8:00.
After I fed Ollie his morning prunes and such I landed in the recliner. Luckily, the boys had some online shopping to do, so they stayed out of my hair. Apparently, they were looking for headlights for Ollie's tractor. Who knew he was planning on driving after dark, especially since he's usually in bed before the sun goes down.
After a couple hours of rest, I figured I had to get my chores done and the best medicine for my back would be movement. I guess I was right, because it got better as the day progressed. Maybe the multiple doses of Advil added to the miraculous recovery as well.
The Preakness Stakes came on and Ollie decided it was the perfect time to ride his horsey, Rusty Alexander. He bounced and bounced in anticipation of the big race. Unfortunately, post time was still 35 minutes away and Daddy was ready to take Ollie to Grandma's for the evening, so Rusty had to scratch from the race.
This evening was almost like a pre-parent night on the town. First we went to Jeremy's new house to help with a plumbing issue. Next, Jason and I went to Maifest, which brought back memories of last spring's trip to Mainstrass. I was 3 months pregnant and yearning for a tall brew and something with tons of barbecue sauce. Of course beer was out of the question (I did steal a few sips from Jeremy) and barbecue sauce caused killer heartburn, so I enjoyed a piece of corn on the cob and watched everyone else founder themselves.
Most notably, I made a vow to myself that no matter what, I would not take my baby in a stroller through that crowd. Last year, the main reason I found strollers to be such an infraction was because they were so annoying to fellow festival goers. Now that I'm a parent I couldn't imagine putting Ollie in danger of cigarette burns and beer spillage from all the drunks. What a difference a year can make in one's perspective.
When we got to Grandma's, Ollie was sound asleep. He woke up as we packed him into his car seat, but fell back asleep in the car. Once we got home he didn't even flinch when I put him into his bed. I really wish I slept that soundly.
Tomorrow will be hectic as every weekend day seems to be. Maybe we'll catch a moment or two to relax, but I'm not counting on it.
